Macedonia, is the northernmost province of Greece. It streches from the west, where it touches Albania, to the East, where it borders with Thraki. Macedonia is divided, like the rest of Greece in Nomoi or cantons or prefectures. They are self administered regions containing within them a main town or city and many small villages. Macedonia has a rich history dating back to ancient times. Here was the birthplace of Alexander the Great, a city which was recently uncovered and found full of archeological treasures. Macedonia was one of the last Greek regions to be liberated, having been joined with the rest of Greece only early this century. Its capital, Thesaloniki (also known as Salonika), is the second largest city in Greece and has almost 500000 inhabitants. Linked to the rest of the world with internatioal airport, train and bus service, it can spearhead one into Halkidiki, a great resort popular with tourists, Thraki which borders Turkey to the East and Agion Oros also known as Mount Athos, a monastic peninsula, free of females (including female animals), inhabited by about 1800 monks.
